On 22 May 2026, Galeria Nizio and the Universum Theatre and Mind (UTU) space in Warsaw’s Praga district hosted the opening of an exhibition by Michał Batory — one of the leading contemporary figures of the Polish poster school, whose work has long moved between Polish and French culture. The artist travelled from Paris especially for the opening, where he has lived and worked since 1987. The evening was accompanied by a live music performance, conceived as a continuation of the exhibition’s narrative, and offered guests the chance to talk with the artist in an intimate setting.
The exhibition is structured as a dialogue across two spaces and two strands of Batory’s work. Galeria Nizio presents posters connected to music and the arts, showing his characteristic approach to building visual metaphor from everyday objects. At UTU, the theatrical strand is on display — work created for opera, ballet and theatre, in which the poster functions as an integral part of the stage experience.
The exhibition’s curator, Karolina Kliszewska, describes Batory’s practice as one of the most recognisable phenomena in contemporary European poster art, operating between applied graphic design, photography and autonomous artistic expression. As she notes, Batory has extended the tradition of the Polish poster school towards staged photography, surrealist objects and theatrical visual metaphor, producing work that is poetic, hypnotic and surrealist while remaining highly communicative.
