THE MASTER’S MATTER | FABRIC

THE MASTER’S MATTER program was launched with a series of meetings and a fabrics exhibition. The ambassador of this matter was Weronika Anna Rosa – interdisciplinary artist and art historian; her works combine painting and industrial design.

In traditional terms, a fabric is a textile product made of threads as a result of weaving. As far as current popular culture is concerned – and this includes interior design and decoration – the words fabric and material are loosely interlaced, creating a textile matter.

In textile design, it is important to pay attention to the texture of the selected fabric, the colors the artist wants to give it, and the PATTERN that makes a given fabric unique. A design that is both artistic and well-crafted can be translated into a product that apparently has the same qualities, but in truth is a digital copy that does not require painstaking manual work each time it is reproduced.

Weronika Anna Rosa, an artist and designer specializing in compositions with floral motifs, described to the audience the stages of working on a pattern. The elements of her works are initially created with the use of traditional drawing and painting techniques; then, in the final stage, the designs are transferred digitally to silks, velvets, linen or cotton.

The workshop conducted by the artist was divided into two 3-hour sessions. During the first meeting the participants learned how to observe plants and learn their structure, so that later on, through drawing, they could create an alphabet of forms inspired by specific species. With its repertoire of forms, textures and colors, flora is an inexhaustible source of inspiration that can be used in various areas of design to create a unique piece. In the second part of the workshop, we focused on composition – closed and open – and the basics of considering fabric space.

We also contemplated the role of decorative fabrics in a contemporary interior. Do we still have a need to decorate interiors with fabrics? Can we use the term artistic decorative fabric when referring to mass-produced textiles? Anna Demska, curator of the Modern Design Centre at the National Museum in Warsaw, answered all these questions, referring to the most important phenomena of Polish Design of the 20th and 21st century in the field of textiles.

The series also featured some lectures. The first of them was conducted by Adam Drozdowski, a lecturer at the Institute of the History of Art at the University of Łódź, an expert in textile industrial design. The second lecturer was Anna Wiszniewska, an art and design historian, curator and lecturer at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

This part of the series was supplemented by an exhibition of works by Weronika Anna Rosa „Tkanina Materiał Materia” (“Fabric, Material, Matter”). The event was held at the Nizio Gallery from July 10 to July 31, 2020.
